Heritage timber construction in Queenslanders differs from modern homes in several important ways: timber boards have contracted and expanded through decades of Queensland seasons, creating micro-gaps at joins that can allow water penetration if pressure is applied; paint systems on older homes are often multiple layers of oil-based and acrylic paints over original coatings that can be lifted by pressure washing; and construction methods of the late 1800s and early 1900s used techniques that assume water will be shed from the surface rather than forced into joins.
The three most common exterior cladding types on Queenslanders are: chamferboard (horizontal boards with a tapered cross-section, nailed with each board overlapping the one below); VJ (vertical jointed) boards (typically used as interior wall panelling but sometimes on exterior cladding); and weatherboard (horizontal boards with a rebate join). Each type requires the same low-pressure approach but different chemical concentrations depending on the timber condition and paint type.
Never pressure wash heritage timber cladding on a Queenslander. High pressure splits joins, forces water into wall cavities, lifts paint on older surfaces and can cause damage that is expensive to repair. Abrasive cleaning methods, wire brushes and scraping to remove growth should also be avoided on heritage timber — the soft wash chemical approach that kills growth without mechanical force is the correct method.
