The anti-reflective coating on solar panel glass is designed to maximise light transmission, and it can be permanently scratched by abrasive cleaning materials or permanently dulled by mineral deposits from hard or tap water. The most common cleaning mistakes are: using abrasive sponges, brushes or scrubbing pads (permanently scratch the anti-reflective coating); using tap water (mineral deposits from hard water evaporation reduce light transmission); using household cleaners with harsh chemicals (can degrade edge seals and anti-reflective coatings); and applying high-pressure water (can force water behind panel frames and damage junction boxes and wiring connections).
If you're cleaning accessible ground-mounted or low single-storey panels: use a soft squeegee or microfibre cloth; use distilled or deionised water only (no tap water); clean early morning or evening when panels are cool and not in direct sun (thermal shock risk on hot panels); and rinse thoroughly with deionised water. For rooftop panels, the safety risk of working at height makes professional cleaning the safer choice in most cases.
