When a mud wasp or paper wasp nest is removed from eaves, soffits or exterior walls, the structure comes away — but the staining it leaves behind on the painted surface is a separate problem. Mud wasp nests leave a shadow of hardened mud residue that penetrates painted surfaces and can be difficult to remove with standard cleaning. Paper wasp nests leave a different residue — grey-brown organic staining from nest material contact with the paint surface. Both require targeted chemical treatment to remove cleanly without damaging the underlying paint or render.
Mud wasp nests are built from clay-based mud that hardens to a cement-like consistency. When the nest is removed, the contact zone leaves a mud shadow embedded in the paint. On older or more porous paint, the mud compounds penetrate deeper. We use an alkaline cleaner to break down the mud residue and restore the paint surface.
Paper wasp nests — the grey honeycomb structure common under eaves — leave an organic staining residue when removed. This is typically lighter than mud wasp staining but requires chemical treatment for complete removal. The pulped wood material releases tannin-like compounds that stain light-coloured paint surfaces.
