Before storm season
Clear the gutters: leaves and sludge are the main cause of overflow in heavy rain.
Flush the downpipes: a gutter can look clear while the downpipe is blocked.
Trim overhanging branches: they drop leaves and can damage the roof in high wind.
Check the roof from the ground for lifted tiles, loose sheets or heavy lichen and moss.
Signs of trouble in a storm
Water pouring over the front of the gutter instead of down the downpipe.
Water stains or damp patches on eaves and fascias.
Gurgling downpipes or water pooling around the base of the house.
After a big storm
Walk around the house and look up: check for debris in gutters, sagging sections or dislodged tiles. If you’re on tank water, check your inlet screens too. Anything that needs a ladder or a climb is a job for someone with the right gear.
Stay off the ladder
Falls from ladders and roofs are a common cause of serious injury around the home. If your gutters need clearing, get someone in who does it every day — and ask them to flush the downpipes and protect your tank while they’re there.
